Dr Yusof Mutahar Presents New English Translation and Commentary of Khidr Bey's Nuniyya

A landmark English translation and contemporary commentary brings Mawlā Khiḍr Bey’s celebrated 15th-century theological poem to a new generation of English-speaking readers.

Perth, Western Australia Oct 8, 2026 (Issuewire.com) - Dr Yusof Mutahar has announced the forthcoming publication of The Nuniyya of Khidr Bey: A Poetic Exposition of the Core Tenets of Hanafi-Maturidi Theology, a new English translation and contemporary commentary on the celebrated 15th-century Arabic theological poem attributed to Mawl Khir Bey Çelebi.

A renowned Ottoman scholar, poet, jurist, and the first qadi of Istanbul after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople, Mawl Khir Bey was an important figure in the intellectual and scholarly history of the Ottoman world. His Nniyyah, traditionally known as Jawhir al-Aqid or the Qadah al-Nniyyah, presents core questions of Islamic creed through the distinctive and highly disciplined form of Arabic theological poetry.

Reflecting the intellectual tradition of Sunni kalm associated with the Hanafi-Maturidi school, the poem brings together questions of divine attributes, prophecy, reason, revelation, and other foundational subjects in Islamic theology within a concise poetic framework.

Despite its historical significance, the Nuniyya has remained relatively inaccessible to English-speaking readers, particularly because of the linguistic, poetic, and theological demands of its classical Arabic composition. Dr Mutahar's new edition seeks to address this gap by providing an English translation alongside the original Arabic text and an extensive contemporary commentary.

The commentary places the poem within its broader theological and intellectual context while explaining complex concepts in a manner accessible to modern readers. It is intended to serve both readers approaching the work for the first time and advanced students seeking a deeper engagement with classical Hanafi-Maturidi theology.

"The Nuniyya of Khidr Bey is an exceptional work because it combines theological precision with the memorable cadence of classical Arabic poetry," said Dr Mutahar. "My aim in translating and providing commentary is to make these profound theological arguments accessible to modern English-speaking audiences while preserving their connection to the classical Hanafi-Maturidi intellectual tradition."

The forthcoming publication forms part of Dr Mutahar's broader scholarly work in translating, studying, and presenting classical Islamic scholarship for contemporary English-speaking audiences. His publications have addressed Qur'anic exegesis, Hanafi jurisprudence, Maturidi theology, Islamic intellectual history, and the works of major scholars of the Sunni tradition.

The book is scheduled for worldwide release in the coming weeks and will be made available through major digital platforms and online booksellers.
